What else moves a paycheck in Iowa
Local income tax
Iowa has no city or county wage tax, but most school districts levy an income surtax: a percentage of the state income tax you owe after credits, set by each district every year. On the 2025 list it runs from 0% (Des Moines, West Des Moines, Davenport) to 20% (Fremont-Mills, East Mills and Postville), with Cedar Rapids at 5%, Iowa City and Sioux City at 4% and Ames at 3%. Six counties (Appanoose, Cass, Pocahontas, Sac, Shelby and Winnebago) add up to 1% more for emergency medical services, on the same basis. On an $80,000 salary, where the state tax is about $2,390, a 5% district takes about $120 a year and a 20% one about $480. It is not deducted above; the 2026 rates come out with the tax forms around December.
