What sets California apart in 2026

No state in this comparison changes rank as sharply with income as California. At $50,000 its state tax is $1,131, just 2.26% of pay, and it places 8th of 29. At $100,000 the bill is $5,069 and it falls to 27th; at $150,000 it is $9,719, or 6.48% of pay, and only one state ranks lower. The reason is the bracket ladder: income above $75,197 is taxed at 9.3% for a single filer, and that rate holds all the way to $384,109.

These are the 2026 brackets the Franchise Tax Board published in October 2026, indexed 3.4% for inflation, with a $5,900 standard deduction for single filers and $11,800 for couples. The FTB says the complete 2026 rates and exemption amounts follow in late December, and the estimate leaves out credits such as the personal exemption credit.

The estimate also omits a deduction that touches every dollar you earn: State Disability Insurance, 1.3% of wages in 2026 with no wage cap since 2024. On an $80,000 salary that is about $1,040 a year. No California city taxes personal income, and San Francisco's payroll expense tax is billed to employers, not withheld from you.
