What sets New York apart in 2026

For 2026 the state budget trimmed the five lowest New York rates by 0.1 percentage point each, so they now run from 3.9% to 5.9%, while the surcharge brackets for high earners, 6.85% up to 10.9%, stay in place through 2032. A single filer's income between $13,900 and $80,650 is taxed at 5.4%, and the next slice, up to $215,400, at 5.9%. The standard deduction is $8,000 single and $16,050 for couples, a fixed amount that does not rise with inflation.

Even after the cut, New York sits in the lower part of the 29-state comparison: 26th at $50,000 and 24th at $75,000, $100,000 and $150,000. State tax on $100,000 comes to $4,860, leaving a single earner $74,320.

Two things make the real figure lower than that. New York City and Yonkers levy their own resident income tax, which costs city residents roughly 3.1% to 3.9% more and is not included. The estimate also skips the tax-benefit recapture that claws back lower-bracket savings once taxable income passes about $107,650, so high incomes are slightly understated. Paid Family Leave, 0.432% of wages capped at $411.91 for the year, also comes out of your pay.
