What sets Ohio apart in 2026

Ohio's state income tax was rebuilt for 2026. Under the HB 96 budget, the first $26,050 of non-business income is untaxed and everything above it is taxed at a single 2.75%, replacing the two rates of 2.75% and 3.125% used in 2025. The Department of Taxation had not republished its rate table for 2026 when these figures were prepared, so they follow the enacted bill rather than an official schedule.

The new structure is light. State tax is $659 on $50,000, 1.32% of pay, and $3,409 on $150,000, or 2.27%. Ohio places 4th of the 29 states at $50,000, $75,000 and $100,000, behind only the three states that tax no wages, and 5th at $150,000, where a single earner keeps $110,382.

The catch is local. Most Ohio cities levy their own income tax, broadly 0.5% to 3% of wages, with Columbus, Cleveland and Cincinnati at the upper end. It is not in this estimate, and at a 2.75% state rate the city tax can easily be the larger of the two. There is no state disability or paid-leave payroll deduction to add on top.
